Meet Chris Cournoyer
Chris Cournoyer is a lifelong Iowan, technology leader, and proven taxpayer watchdog. As Iowa’s Lieutenant Governor and former State Senator, Chris has built a career on improving government efficiency, cutting waste, and making sure every tax dollar is spent wisely. From leading a $200 million government realignment to passing historic tax cuts, Chris has always fought for Iowans — not headlines.
With over 27 years of experience in the private tech sector and a record of reform-minded leadership, Chris is running for State Auditor to bring transparency, accountability, and innovation to every level of Iowa government.
Chris believes in an Auditor’s office that serves all Iowans — not one party, not one agenda. That means focusing on the facts, eliminating inefficiencies, and delivering real results for taxpayers.
Chris currently serves as the 48th Lieutenant Governor of Iowa and a former State Senator representing Clinton, Jackson, and Scott counties. A computer science graduate and former senior consultant at Andersen Consulting (now Accenture), she also ran a successful web development business for over 20 years. In the Iowa Senate, she chaired the Technology Committee—authoring Iowa’s landmark data privacy law—and held leadership roles on key budget and policy committees. A longtime advocate for education and STEM, she served on her local school board, taught robotics and coding, and is a former substitute teacher. Cournoyer is also a former reserve sheriff’s deputy and the proud mother of four.
Vision
I’m running for State Auditor because Iowa deserves a true taxpayer watchdog — not a political activist.
As Lt. Governor and a former State Senator, I’ve worked every day to make Iowa’s government leaner, smarter, and more accountable. I helped lead efforts to consolidate agencies, centralize IT systems, and modernize operations — saving over $200 million and counting. And I’ve supported every major tax cut and protection for Iowa families, including our new flat tax and the elimination of taxes on retirement income. In addition, I championed legislation to protect the rights and privacy of Iowans.
But we can do more. The Auditor’s Office should lead by example — implementing innovative tools like AI, working with local governments to find efficiencies, and giving citizens the transparency they deserve through enhanced promotion of Iowa’s transparency portal.
I’ll make the Auditor’s Office a home for recommendations emerging from the Governor’s DOGE Task Force on modernizing government operations.
This office shouldn’t be a stepping stone or a soapbox. It should be a service. I’m ready to get to work.
— Chris
